To Import means to copy content from Client(s) to the Content of a BookMacster Bookmarkshelf. To Export is the opposite, to copy from a Bookmarkshelf to a Client. If you Import and then Export, all of the Bookmarkshelf’s Clients will have, as nearly as possible, the same bookmarks, and we say that they are synchronized or synced.
In the Settings ▸ Clients tab of a Bookmarkshelf window, you set the parameters of the Import and Export operations so that the operations can be conveniently repeated either manually or automatically, at scheduled intervals, whenever bookmarks change, etc.
Note: In many applications, Import and Export hang out at the bottom of the File menu and are used infrequently. BookMacster has this feature too; we call them Quick Import and Quick Export.
The most important parameters for Import and Export are, of course, the lists of locally-installed and/or web-based browser applications or other loose files which will be imported from or exported to. For generality, we refer to these as your Import and Export Clients. BookMacster’s New Bookmarkshelf wizard shows you the available Clients when a New Bookmarkshelf is created, and you check ON the ones you want.
You edit the list of Clients for a Bookmarkshelf, and set its characteristics in its Settings ▸ Clients tab.
Note that if you always access your bookmarks in BookMacster directly, what we call Usage Style 3, you will not use regular Import ant Export, and you should not choose any Clients. In Settings ▸ Clients, your list will be empty.
To manually run a regular Import or Export, open the Bookmarkshelf document and in the menu click Bookmarkshelf ▸ Import or Export.
Import and Export operations can be run automatically in response to various triggers, by adding them as commands to an Agent.
BookMacster’s Quick Import and Quick Export items in the File menu allow you to execute one-time imports or exports without adding or configuring a Client.
To import from or export to a loose, standalone file such as an XBEL file that you have exported from another bookmarks managedment application, click the Choose File (Advanced) menu item. Then, take care to properly choose New File or Existing File at the top of the sheet.
For Unknown Clients. For Clients which are available on your Mac account but which you have not set in Settings ▸ Clients, some default QuickMerge settings will be used for the Import or Export. In particular, Delete Unmatched Items will be off.
Therefore, if you wish to have remaining in your Bookmarkshelf only items imported from a Client which does not have QuickMerge after its name, before the import you should Delete All Content. You should also visit the Settings ▸ Structure tab and configure as desired. Similarly, if you wish to create a file which has only items exported from your Bookmarkshelf, you should export to a New File.
For Your Clients. For each available Client which you have set in Settings ▸ Clients, you get two menu choices. QuickMerge is described above. Client Settings uses your settings for this Client, plus, for Imports, your Import Postprocessing settings. Unless you have changed them, this means that Delete Unmatched Items will be on, and any items not existing in the source will be deleted.
You can migrate your bookmarks from URL Manager Pro™, Webnote™, or Webnote Happy™ to BookMacster via an XBEL file. To do this,
